Our history begins as early as 1965
Lidingöloppet has a long and distinguished history, and here you can read interviews, learn about the winners over the years, what has happened during the events of the years, and much, much more.

The year was 1965 when Karl Axel "Kacke" Karlberg and Sven Gärderud hatched the brilliant idea of starting a cross-country race for fitness enthusiasts.
The idea came after Kacke and Sven read an editorial by Sven Lindhagen in Idrottsbladet. "Athletics does not have a truly broad competition that draws people out of their homes. With that as inspiration, the first Lidingöloppet was organized. The race was 30 km long and 644 runners signed up, of these, 512 runners completed the entire race.
Since 1982, Lidingöloppet has been recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest cross-country race. A top record that Lidingöloppet still holds.
Over the years, several different races have been added and today Lidingöloppet is a weekend event with a challenge for everyone.
